Surtout porté dans l'Italie du Sud, c'est un ancien nom de baptême popularisé par saint Pantaléon, martyr en Turquie au début du IVe siècle. Le sang de saint Pantaléon, conservé à Ravallo, près d'Amalfi, se liquéfierait chaque année au moment de sa fête (27 juillet). Etymologie incertaine : la première racine correspond au grec pantos (= tout), la seconde pourrait être eleêmon (= compassion), latinisé en leo (= lion). Variantes : Pantaleon, Pantaleoni, Pantalon, Pantaloni (par l'intermédiaire de la commedia dell'arte, le nom est à l'origine du mot pantalon).
